MYTH: Antidepressants are addictive.

TRUTH: Antidepressants are not addictive, but they should be prescribed and the treatment withdrawn in a controlled way under medical supervision.


MYTH: Antidepressants work for everyone.

TRUTH: Antidepressants work for 50% to 70% of women. Others will need different strategies or a combination of treatments.


MYTH: You cannot take antidepressants if you are breastfeeding.

TRUTH: There are antidepressants suitable for breastfeeding mothers. Your doctor will prescribe a suitable version that is safe for your baby.


MYTH: St Johns Wort is a natural herbal antidepressant therefore effective and safe to take.

TRUTH: This is not recommended as a treatment for depression. There is some evidence that it is effective but it has not been rigorously tested as other medicines. The strength of the ingredients vary in different preparations and this makes it difficult to ensure the correct dose.
