Health Visiting

TWO YEARS

At around two years you can expect your child to be able to do the following:

 

Physical

  • Runs well and can avoid objects
  • Tries to kick a ball
  • Climbs on and off furniture
  • Walks up and down stairs, holding on to rail, one step at a time
  • Throws ball overhand

 

Cognitive

  • Begins to show preference which hand to use
  • Holds pencil by using thumb and first two fingers
  • Copies lines and circles
  • Can build a tower of four or more bricks
  • Can name items in picture books

 

Social and emotional

  • Likes to pretend and role play
  • Inquisitive but still no sense of danger
  • May have tantrums
  • Demands a lot of attention
  • Will parallel play – plays beside other children but does not actually play with them
  • Drinks from a cup with no lid

 

Speech and language

  • Follows simple instructions
  • Has a vocabulary of 50 plus words
  • Will put two-three words together
  • Can name well known objects
