BUILDING LOVING RELATIONSHIPS

Babies are unable to rationalise their feelings due to their under developed brains. The way you respond to your baby can have a significant impact on their brain growth and ability to learn to manage their emotions now and in later life. Here are some suggestions how you can comfort and respond to your baby:

  • Picking baby up and soothing him when he is crying, you will not “spoil him”
  • Frequent skin to skin contact/wearing in a wrap sling
  • Offering the breast for comfort as well as feeding
  • Keeping baby close to you
  • Touching, massaging and rocking baby gently
  • Talking to baby
