PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE FOR A CHILD

To become continent, a child develops a number of processes which allows them to gain voluntary control over when they pass urine or empty their bowels.

Children with motor, behavioural and cognitive disabilities may not progress along the same timeline as that for children without disabilities. Bladder awareness and motor skills necessary to toilet may be delayed in these children. For many disabled children, toilet training is achievable but may be a long-term challenge and success may occur one step at a time.
