MEDICATION

Antidepressants may be prescribed, especially if your depression is moderate to severe. They can be used in combination with other treatments to gain greater effects.

Antidepressants help to reduce symptoms by altering the chemicals in the brain which are causing the symptoms, allowing you to cope better with your new baby.

It can take two to four weeks for antidepressants to be effective, therefore it is important to continue to take them even if initially they do not appear to be effective. It is normal to need a course for six to nine months, and should be continued for the advised length of time, to avoid a return of the symptoms of depression.
