GARDEN SAFETY

  • Make sure ponds are filled in or fenced off and always supervise children near water. Young children can drown in as little as 5cm of water
  • Always follow manufacturer’s instructions when using weed killers, adhesives or solvents and always keep them in original containers
  • Supervise young children in the garden. Some plants and berries are poisonous or can cause an allergic reaction. As children get older you can teach them never to eat anything growing in your garden or in the countryside unless you tell them it’s safe to do so
  • Keep children safely away when using lawnmowers or doing DIY projects or household repairs
  • Keep sharp garden tools in good repair and tidied safely away after use
  • Never let young children anywhere near lit barbeques or bonfires and remember that barbeques will stay hot long after you have finished cooking
  • If you have a trampoline it should be placed on soft, energy absorbing ground and should only be used by one child at a time. Adults should not go on with small children as their weight is uneven and could propel the child off the trampoline. Always look for a trampoline that comes with a safety netting
  • Ensure you and your child wear a correctly fitting cycle helmet, and that they get into the habit of wearing it whenever they are riding their bike – both on and off the road
